Starting Our Third Week in Lumberton

Monday, November 5, 2018

It started raining off and on last night and continued this morning. Good sleeping weather. It was cloudy, dreary and drizzling most of the day.

The Hills led us in our devotion time this morning. Using scripture from Hebrews and Psalm, Carol reminded us that an old traditional anchor has a section that looks like a cross. Jesus is our anchor. The cross is our anchor yesterday, today, and forever. Thanks, Carol and Dave.

We divided up beginning tasks and headed to our job sites. Susan went back to Cheryl’s with Mike and Dave. Anne went to Jackie’s with Jo, Cindy, Bruce, Carol, Mike and Lee. Again, Max stayed very busy running between the two jobs and the warehouse keeping us all in supplies and helping out where needed. We all stayed very busy and accomplished a lot, but didn’t get many pictures. At Cheryl’s they worked the punch list. Everything is done except the final clean up of the job site and possibly an exhaust fan. Great job! At Jackie’s lots was done. A closet ceiling was textured by Lee and Jo as well as some Kilz in the closet and master bath. Carol resumed painting in one of the bed rooms. Mike and Bruce installed furnace registers, took down a built-in cabinet, took down some doors for paint on tome and bottom, moved lots of stuff for us while Cindy painted, sanded, Kilzed and worked on some drywall. Anne was busy going between all the tasks. Good day. We will see what tomorrow brings. We are awaiting another house assignment.

Come back tomorrow to see the finished product.

All Saints Sunday

Sunday, November 4, 2018

Today was another beautiful day. Cold but sunny with blue skies. It was 39 when we got up this morning.

All Saints Bells
Bells for the ones who have gone on before us

The team worshiped at Chestnut Street UMC, our host agency, again today. Today was All Saints Day and the church had a service of remembrance for those church members who died this year. We remembered all those who have touched our lives whom we have lost. It was a special time of thanksgiving for the lives they lived. A little sad, but also a celebration. The service continued with another wonderful message from Pastor Lowry and ended with the celebration of communion. Really good service.

The team went to Texas Steakhouse for lunch and then home to prepare for team meeting. Our last couple arrived about 4:30 and we all met for our introductory meeting at 6:00. We will all get back to working to get people back in their home in the morning.

Laid Back Day And A Look Back

Eggnog French ToastThe clouds cleared out and today was another beautiful day. We slept in really late for us – almost 8:00. We haven’t had many sleep in days lately. We had no one leaving today and the only one coming in was in the afternoon. We got a slow start to the day and decided to try a new recipe for French toast for breakfast. Max just made it up (two eggs, eggnog, pinch of salt and sourdough bread.) We bought some eggnog last week to use in our hot chocolate. Max decided to use it for French toast. It was really good.

We spent a lot of time yesterday on family estate business and after sending out some emails late yesterday we got some calls this morning so we again spent a good part of the morning on family estate issues. After that we went to Lowe’s and were able to pick up some things we needed for Jackie’s house and the made a Walmart stop for groceries. A really nice grocery store is something we have not found here in Lumberton. There is no Publix, Kroger, Whole Foods, Sprouts etc. We have found an IGA, small Aldi and the Walmart Market which is across the street but we do miss our Publix. We then returned to Fred to greet our incoming NOMAD, Joanne. Max and Cindy helped her get parked and then we did some walking. We also had some NOMADS new member applications to handle this afternoon. It was a real laid back sort of day.  For our main meal today we made instant pot pot roast.  Our first time to give this a try and it also was quite good.  Good eats.

Since we didn’t have much of interest, we thought we would share what we were doing 2 years ago today in another part of North Carolina which is beautiful this time of year, Hayesville, NC at the Hinton Rural Life Center.

New Friends

Friday, November 2, 2018

Today was a cloudy and sometimes rainy day. The sun poked out for a very short time this afternoon but by late afternoon the temperatures were thankfully starting to drop. The humidity was very high today and it was muggy feeling most of the day.

Reid was on his way to Ohio by 8:45 and had a long day of driving ahead of him. Hopefully he didn’t have rain the entire way, although he says rain doesn’t bother him. Cheryl and Bill got on their way about 12:45 but didn’t have as far to go. It was great to have these three with us last week. We hope we work with them again soon.

Our neighborhood roosters came by for a visit
Our neighborhood roosters came by for a visit while we were sitting outside

It was only a short time later that Bruce and Cindy arrived. More new-to-us NOMADS! This week all three rigs coming in are NOMADS we have never had on project. We are looking forward to new friends. Cindy walked with us for a while this afternoon and we introduced her to the pecan tree here in the park. There a lots of pecans here. Too bad we didn’t bring our nut cracker. Also this afternoon we had a visitor. New NOMADS from the area came by to see if they could talk to some NOMADS. Well, as God would have it, guess who’s rig they parked beside. Most of you know we could talk about NOMADS for more than a few minutes. We had a great visit with Chuck and Nancy. Hope we work with them soon too.

We sat and visited with Mike and Susan a while tonight. Later in the evening we had a call from our niece and nephew. Always enjoy hearing from Dave and Jennifer. Another good day! Hope everyone has a great weekend.
