We were up early this morning and did our three mile walk before church. We went back to Forest Lake UMC but today visited the early (9:00 am) traditional service. Just as we walked in the door we met an old friend we hadn’t seen since we retired. Anne has known him since high school and Max knows him through EMA. Such a treat and we are going to try to have dinner together one night this week. We also got to visit with Melody who did Mama Ruby’s service for us. Melody is an associate at Forest Lake and it was such a treat to spend a little time with her. It’s also nice to be able to just walk to church. If we lived in Tuscaloosa, we would certainly consider Forest Lake for our home church. Don’t anyone jump to any conclusions, we are not moving to Tuscaloosa, but it is nice to have a church where we feel at home to attend while we are here.
After church we tried something new for brunch. We made french toast using a cinnamon raisin brioche. It was wonderful if we do say so ourselves and we will definitely be making it again. After brunch, we did a little accounting work, showed the house, watched some TV and rested. Then we lucked out and finally got a nice rain from one of the late afternoon scattered thunderstorms. The temperature dropped and when it quit raining we got our afternoon 3 miles in before it got too hot again. It was a nice quiet day. Hope yours was too.
Last day of June. 2018 is half over. Something to think about.
Today we were up early to another hot day. We had some business to take care of first thing then when we got back to Fred we made some BLTE’s – bacon, lettuce, tomato and egg. Loving our fresh tomatoes. We finally had to give up and water the grass today too. Mama Ruby’s zoysia grass is not maintenance free like the grass at our house. From the forecast we will be watering for the foreseeable future. We are having scattered afternoon thunderstorms but they are very scattered. We got nothing but 101 heat index today.
There was more accounting to be done today. A lot of progress was actually made today but there is just so much to do. We extended all the tax returns this year and now its time to get everything finished and caught up. After working hard all afternoon, we looked at the temperature and decided we would do something new, for us. We are Silver Sneakers members through our health insurance and we decided to visit a local gym to workout in the air conditioning. With Silver Sneakers we can find gyms all across the country, wherever we travel, give them our membership card to scan and work out for free. Here in Tuscaloosa the gym we choose (from lots of choices) allows us to use everything except classes. So the pool and lap pool as well as weight room, gym, indoor track, and all the equipment is ours to use. Some of the gyms also allow us to participate in the various classes too. It’s neat because we can go to one gym today and try a different one tomorrow, or one in the morning and a different one on the afternoon. We rode stationary bikes, walked on the treadmills, and tried out the ellipticals too. Hope we aren’t sore in the morning. Anyway its was a nice change of pace and something we will probably do again. Especially if it stays this hot. That’s it for our day. Hope yours was good.
We were up early this morning and it was nice and cool. Nice!! We went for an early 3 miles and it was the best walk we have had in months. Oh, we were still needing a bath when we returned to Fred but it was certainly a much more enjoyable walk. On our first loop we met a new family of very young ducklings. Very cute.
After a bath and a quick breakfast we were on the road back to Oneonta. We received a call yesterday afternoon that Aunt Helen and Aunt Jean were going to move to a new room. They are now back on the rehab hall up close to the desk. Room 403 for the family. The staff said they would stay in this room permanently. The facility needed to make some moves that had nothing to do with our ladies and so we were told, the nurses on the rehab unit said that if they were going to get long-term care patients they wanted Helen and Jean. We had a very good experience on that wing for rehab so we were fine with the move. We helped get them moved and re-hung some pictures and arranged some things for them. They both said they liked their new “apartment” and seemed quite content when we left this afternoon. They are having a little problem finding their room again but the staff will help them until they get reoriented. Everything seemed good so we are happy.
BLT with Blount County Tomato. It was almost gone when we remembered to take a picture.
Max got a hair cut while Anne went to the Whited Farms produce stand and purchased some fresh, home grown, Blount County tomatoes and another watermelon. Always glad when we can get our first locally grown tomatoes. Then we had a good visit with Donna at Blount Office Supplies. We really miss Donna and Barry. We will try to make up for lost time when we get things completed in Tuscaloosa. We returned to the mountain to check on the house and stopped at Helen’s to visit with Debra and Carol for a while. They were having a few days of visiting and playing Scrabble and other games. It was great to spend some time with them. Thanks for allowing our interruption of your game, ladies.
The storm that came through late yesterday afternoon did a fair amount of tree damage in our area and we were not sure what we would find on our tree covered driveway and house. We did have some limbs down but nothing that could not be easily moved and fortunately, no limbs on the house. Again we were very blessed.
We got back on the road just before rush hour and made it back to Tuscaloosa without problems. Once we got back to Fred, it was time to fry up some bacon and make BLTs. BLTs with Blount County tomatoes, and watermelon. Two of the best things of summer.
We have done a lot of work in Tuscaloosa the last few weeks. Hopefully we are about to see some fruits of our labors. We will let you know. It was a busy day but good day. Hope everyone has a great weekend. It is now 8:00 pm and it is still 90 degrees with a heat index of 98, so we may talk ourselves out of walking tonight.
It started off hot again today. By the time we did our morning 3 miles it was already in the upper 80’s. But like they say: “If you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change.” Okay, that hasn’t been true the last few days but today was different. This afternoon we went back into our old “weather mode” with radar on the TV and NWS weather chat on the computer. There was no real damage around us but we read about a good bit of damage in other counties. When we saw the gust front approaching on the radar we did pull in the windward slides.
The good part for us was that the temperature dropped over 20 degrees in a very short period. And that made our evening walk MUCH nicer.

Temperature before the rain. The sensor was in the shade but getting reflected heat from the concrete driveway.
